As though my opinion matters...

The Fountain

I waited so long to see The Fountain. I saw Requiem for a Dream when it came out and it hypnotized me. So when I heard that Darren Aronofsky had a new film I jumped for joy. But then I saw the preview and my interest faded away. A story that takes place in the past, present and future, probably with a pessimistic and depressing ending. I decided to pass it up, imagining some strange Back To The Future with a Romeo and Juliet twist. When I picked it up at the store I was completely oblivious to the fact I had my future favorite movie in my hands. First off, The Fountain is visually stunning, surpassing the average imagination. Clint Mansell's score for the film is equally amazing, and just like the one he composed for Requiem For A Dream, is a vital part of the film. The performance from Hugh jackman is amazing. I've never seen him act so well. What really impressed me was the plot itself, how complex and ridiculous it seemed until the very end, when the movie rewards you by making it all fit together. The Fountain is for not for the inattentive, you must know all the little details put before you to understand the film. It's almost tedious and tiring but at the same time keeps you mesmerized and patient. If you hang tight until the end, you'll find The Fountain is a very well thought out film. There are few movies like it and I can't wait to see what's next for Darren Aronofsky.
